I recently came across the Mormon Women Project that "celebrates women who have made deliberate choices — with the help of the Spirit and personal revelation — to overcome personal trials, magnify motherhood, contribute to communities outside their homes, or be converted to the Gospel". A few of the stories they have posted involve an experience with a disability, including the following:
- A Special Mother for Special Needs by Nancy McNabb who lost a daughter to SIDS and has a son with autism.
- Nothing is Impossible by Dee Dee Shipley who has diabetes and has adopted ten children with disabilities.
- Beyond this Mortal Coil by Lynn Anderson who had two children (now deceased) who were born with epidermolysis bullosa
Resource site with a directory of Deaf Unit Directory and other great information for members of the Church who are Deaf.
Information relevant to LDS church leaders on dealing with special needs, mental illness, personality disorders, and physical and mental handicaps.
I came across what appears to be a fairly new search engine called LDSsearch that searches only LDS-themed online content and already includes over 46,000 pages. I was a little skeptical at first, but when I did a search for 'disability', there were 275 pages of results returned and many of them relevant. For those of you who use a feedreader, you can easily subscribe to any feed by using the RSS link on the bottom of any page.
JennySmith.net is an online collection of LDS clipart, object lessons, and activity ideas. The website also contains a Challenging Callings area, including a section on Special Needs. This is a great resource. However I am going to recommend the website for a completely different reason.
On occassion, we'll highlight a site that we've found particularly useful from the LDS Disability Directory and our first stop will be the the Mental Health Resource Foundation. From their About the Foundation page:
The Foundation's interests are to identify, develop, and promote resources for those persons with mental health concerns.
